  Women Gain Ground on the Boards of Directors of Both Family and Non-family Businesses in Spain

There are more female board members in Spain, but still not many. Also, in recent years, family businesses are showing slower progress than non-family businesses in increasing women's representation in boards. This is according to a 2017 study of women's roles in the boards of directors of Spanish listed companies, published by IESE's Chair of Family-Owned Business.

Of the 71 listed companies analyzed in Spain, 46 businesses (65 percent) had no female directors on their boards back in 2004. Fast-forward to 2015 and there were only 11 companies (15 percent) with no female representation on their boards.

So, how does the progress of family businesses and non-family businesses compare over these years? Here's a look at board composition:


Methodology, Very Briefly

The report analyzes the composition of the boards of directors of 71 companies (39 family businesses and 32 non-family businesses) that have traded on the Spanish stock exchange without interruption between 2004 and 2015.
